Every business starts with an idea and more than 200 business owners vied for the honors of having this year's best idea in the 2005 Small Business Awards held Monday evening at Lansdowne Resort.

The 12th annual award ceremony honored "businesses who have risen above the rest. People who have fought the odds and won," said Chamber President Jen Sterling.

Potential clients pushed Jim Huber into starting his own business. The Web developer and freelance cartoonist sprinted to the stage with his arms raised above his head, a la Rocky Balboa, to accept the Home-Based Business of The Year Award for Huberspace. He kept the crowd of 500 laughing with his self-deprecating humor: "[I] was just expecting a free meal."

Huber, who said during an interview that he had always wanted to start his own business because when working for someone else, "I could grow no higher than the highest position at a company. If I have my own business, the only limit is myself."

The idea to start his own Web development company came to Huber when he had the opportunity to work for multiple companies but limited himself out of loyalty to his employer, Huber said. The only way he could work with multiple clients at a time was if he ran his own business.

During his acceptance speech, which he kept short to catch the Dallas Cowboys football game, Huber advised other home-based businesses whose office is only a room away to spend time with their families. If time wasn't possible, he joked they should at least "spend money on your family."
